Effects in the Middle East:

Israel, Britain, and France were very successful in achieving their military objectives, but pressure from both the United States and Soviet Union forced a withdrawal from the conquered Sinai Peninsula. Additionally, Britain and France failed in their political and strategic aims of controlling the Suez Canal as they had prior to its recent Nationalization and removing Nasser from power. Israel had more luck with gains such as attaining freedom of navigation through the Straits of Tiran. Finally, the United Nations Expeditionary Force would police the Egyptian-Israeli border in the Sinai Desert to help both nations to adhere to the ceasefire.

Effects Worldwide:

  1. Western Europe was proven to be ineffective at negotiating against the United States, signalling the rise of the Superpowers.
  2. As a result of the American-Soviet Agreements over the resolution of the Arab-Israeli War, the concurrent Hungarian Revolution against Soviet Authority was not supported in the West and the Hungarians suffered mightily.
  3. Nasser remained in power and was seen as the hero of the Arab World for Stopping Israel even though his military efforts were a complete failure. Ba'athism and Arab Nationalism spread throughout the Middle East.
  4. The United Nations effectively became a rubber-stamp for the Superpowers.
  5. The disagreements between the Americans and the British and French became the most divisive issue between the NATO allies.
  6. Britain and France realized that they could no longer maintain their imperial projects in Africa and began to withdraw their forces.
