Edison ran a commercial laboratory, from which many many inventions were made.

In the particular case of the light bulb, you should look up the wikipedia entry for Joseph Swan, who was the person responsible for this invention.

Edison was allowed to take Swan's (patented 1878) ideas back to the US. Swan was not particularly interested in fortune and allowed Edison to manufacture in the US, whilst Swan manufactured in the UK.

In those days, a major problem was the production of a good vacuum, and though it was not appreciated at the time, also the production of a good device to measure vacuum. This latter was vital.
