What are the exact steps you are supposed to take after you a hit a car?

[Edit]

Answer

1. Check to see if you or your party is injured.

2. Check other vehicle driver and party is injured.

3. Call police

4. Check damage on both vehicles and copy down license plate #.

5. Exchange information with other party.

6. Wait for police and DO NOT SAY IT WAS YOUR FAULT IF OTHER DRIVER IS TRYING TO PIN IT ON YOU. (More than likely both parties are at fault)

7. Wait for police

7a. THIS IS AN ILLEGAL STEP ONLY DO IT IF YOU THINK YOU AND THE OTHER DRIVER CAN COME TO AN AGREEMENT, DO NOT GIVE THE OTHER DRIVER ANY OF YOUR INFORMATION AND COPY HIS LICENSE PLATE #. IF YOU ALREADY DID GIVE YOUR INFORMATION AND AN AGREEMENT HAS BEEN MADE ASK FOR THE ENTIRE NOTEPAD IN WHICH IT WAS WRITTEN ON JUST TO BE SAFE.

If you and driver can talk it out and if vehicle damage is extremely minor, you both may chose to ignore it and go on your way to avoid higher insurance costs. However you must then call the police stating that you and the other driver had exchange information (even if you didn't) and left the area and they will not come to area where the accident happened.
