Answer:

the amount of impurity's or dirt in the water. the amount of dust that gets blown into a pool how many plants and trees are around it. algae present in the water etc all of these will play a part in blocking up the filter surface and reduce through flow until it the back pressure becomes too high indicating the need for a back wash.
