Food stamps are for the purpose of buying food. You can't buy soaps, detergent, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, candy, soda, beer (or any alcohol), only food. The clerk or cashier in the store should be able to tell you if an item is eligible for purchase with food stamps. There are a few places that accept food stamps for nonfood items, but that is fraud and those who do this can be fined and/or arrested. Food stamps are for food only.

Pre-packaged edible foods. In most cases, diapers and some similar items can NOT be obtained with food stamps. There are programs with assistance for those items as well but those are not FOOD programs. (be accurate and more definitive with an answer)

Specific to food...

In accordance with USDA as of Jan 26, 2010

Items that carry a nutirtion facts label are eligible food items. example: Red Bull 16oz is eligible

Items that carry a supplement facts label are classified by the FDA as supplements, and are therfore not eligible. example: Rockstar 16oz is NOT eligible

Nutrition = yes

Supplement = no

What is Nutrition? What is Supplement?

In accordance with USDA I quote from the Food and Nutrition Service guide pamphlet dated Jan 26, 2010...

"Product manufacturers label their products based on Food and Drug Administration labeling guidelines. ...."

The answers are not always what we think they should be, but they are always exactly what they are.

As a retailer I am getting really tired of morons who say, "but you can buy that now... (fill in name of idiot) said so."

-----

The USDA also has a list for Generic items (items without a nutrition label printed).

I will not reprint that here but it is available at there website under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program location.

You can get just about everything with food stamps.

Bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, poultry and dairy products

Energy drinks that have a nutrition facts label are eligible foods. If they have

Supplement Facts they are not eligible.

Items such as birthday and other special occasion cakes are eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits as long as the value of non-edible decorations does not exceed 50 percent of the purchase price of the cake.
