LCD flat panel displays.
Two examples of flat panel monitors are Light-emitting diode display (LED) and Liquid-crystal display (LCD). LCD monitors light the entire backside of the LCD panel using a cold compact florescent light while LED monitors use its own light to provide the backlight. LED lights more energy efficient than the cold compact florescent light used by LCD.
Scientists created the first flat panel monitors in 1964 at the University of Illinois. This new invention had a better quality of pictures and revolutionized technology.
Yes they are called flatpanels. but so are TFT/Plasma displays which use a different technology altogether. Flatpanel describes what it looks like not necessarily the display technology.
LCD (liquid crystal display)
TFT stands for thin-film transistor. This is the technology for the ultimate LCD display. LCD monitors, also called flat panel displays, are replacing the old style cathode ray tubes (CRTs) as the displays of choice. Nearly all LCD monitors today, including mobile phones, use TFT technology.
In terms of software drivers, most modern LCD TV monitors are plug-and-play-compatible with Windows XP. Display settings for the screen can be adjusted in Control Panel.

LCD monitors, which have a liquid crystal display, can save a lot of space whether in the home or the office. This is because unlike CRT monitors, LCD monitors are usually flat panel monitors. This means you can save a lot of space on your desk. Also, you can consider getting two LCD monitors, hooking them up to one computer, and saving space while giving yourself an enormous amount of productivity boosting viewing area for your computer. This can enhance games, improve your work productivity, and make everything from email to complex computing tasks easier and more efficient for you.
