Using the median plane (vertically) and the transumbilical plane (horizontally), the abdomen is divided into four quadrants:

  • Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)
  • Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)
  • Right Lower Quandrant (RLQ)
  • Left Lower Quandrant (LLQ)

Very briefly, some of the major structures/organs contained within each are:

  • RUQ = most of the liver, gallbladder
  • LUQ = spleen, most of the stomach
  • RLQ = appendix
  • LLQ = sigmoid colon

So they can do what is referred to as surface anatomy. That means that they can know where organs are located in the abdomen to check their overall health or do surgery.
