Normal software is treated as a literary work under most copyright systems, and as such only the rightsholder has the right to copy, alter, distribute, or perform/display it. Notably the End User Licensing Agreement typically gives the user morerights.
Freeware is generally a demo version of a program, which is free to use and (sometimes) distribute, but can be limited in various ways (no saving, expires after a certain amount of time, etc.). The user has no additional rights.
Shareware is freely distributed software, but usually carries numerous caveats on what can and can't be done: you may not alter it, it must be accompanied by its ReadMe file, etc.
Open Source software most often uses the GNU license, which allows the user to copy, alter, and distribute the work, as long as the resulting program carries the same license. That is, if I write it and pass it around for free, and you make it better, you must also pass your version around for free.
