Bandages like the band-aid brand is used for a small cut, scrape, burn, ect. If you mean bandages for a hurt limb, then you simpily wrap it around your limb to keep it safe and straight. This way, it heals properly.

Bandages are used to hold the dressings, or gauze in place. not much more to it. Even bandaids, there is dressing, the little gauze square is called dressing, and the sticky part is the bandage. it may also keep the area clean, and help prevent infection.

The two main uses of bandage from a first aid standpoint is for controlling bleeding and for support of a fracture or strain/sprain.

If can also be used, in rare cases, as an improvisation tool in a medical setting. This may include splinting and using a bandage to tie the patient onto the stretcher.

Most bandages used in first aid are not actually sterile. It is therefore important to use only sterile dressings to cover wounds in the abdomen. However, in an emergency scenario, ANY material will do.
