The human digestive system, also called 'Gastro Intestinal System' (GIT) includes everything from 'Palate' to 'Rectum'. Following are the components of this system;
1. Mouth
2. Oesophagus
3. Stomach
4. Small Intestine
a. Deudenum
b. Jejunum
c. Ileum
5. Large Intestine
a. Ascending Colon
b. Transverse Colon
c. Descending Colon
d. Sigmoid Colon
6. Rectum
Different parts of GIT secrete different types of chemicals which help in the digestion of food. These chemicals are called 'Digestive Enzymes'. They may help in digestion by breaking or diluting food particles by certain biochemical reactions.
The primary function of the digestive system is to break down the food we eat into smaller parts so the body can use them to build and nourish cells and provide energy.
The digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. Inside this tube is a lining called the mucosa. In the mouth, stomach, and small intestine, the mucosa contains tiny glands that produce juices to help digest food.
Two solid organs, the liver and the, produce digestive juices that reach the intestine through small tubes. In addition, parts of other organ systems (for instance, nerves and blood vessels) play a major role in the digestive system.
When we eat things like bread, meat, and vegetables, they are not in a form the body can use as nourishment. Our food and drink must be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients before they can be absorbed into the blood and carried to cells throughout the body. Digestion is the process by which food and drink are broken down into their smallest parts so that the body can use them.
The function of the digestive system is to break down whatever you eat and by doing just that release the nutrients (all usable and even some unusable parts). The usable nutrients will then be absorbed and send to the bloodstream so that the whole body can utilize them. Unusable parts will mostly be passed out through rectum and via urinary tract.
A bit crude explanation but simple and to the point.
The list below are the three main functions of the digestive system.
Saliva moistens food particles, helps bind them, and begins the chemical digestion of carbohydrates. Also solvent, it dissolves foods so they can be tasted.
To excrete the food that you have been eating for about the past 8 hours.
The digestive system does not work with the immune system to regulate body functions.
Elimination is one of the functions of the digestive system. The movement of undigested food in the form of feces is one of the functions of the excretory system.
The first of the two functions of the digestive system is to break down nutrients. The second function is the absorption of nutrients.

There is one very important function for the digestive system. The digestive system is meant to break down food for the body to absorb.
The digestive system does not work with the immune system to regulate body functions.
The main function of the digestive system is to get the food and water you drink through your body.
