What is the use of liquid phenol in calamine lotion?

Phenol is also known as carbolic acid, and is used as a disinfecting agent and topical anesthetic. It may be used to cauterize small wounds and is used in conjunction with calamine (zinc oxide and ferric oxide) as an antipruritic, or anti-itch agent. Why phenol is more reactive than anisol?

Because the -OH group present in phenol is more ring activating than -OCH3 group in anisole.

What are identification tests of phenol?

You add a specific ionic compound in a solution to determine if phenol or any of its derivatives are present. Ferric chloride (FeCl3) for example, can be used for such tests. Basically, when you mix the solution with the compound, the ions will interact with the phenol molecules or groups, and as a result, the solution will briefly change color. If there is no colour change in the solution, this suggest there is no phenol or phenol-based molecules in your solution.

What are phenol side effects on the human body?

In India, phenol is widely used as disinfectant for toilets and floors. Besides these two uses, many more consumer products also use phonel for different purposes. I am more concern about the amount of phenol being used in the urban area of the country. Every toilet+floor is being cleaned with at least 500ml of phenol on daily basis. 99.99% of the peoples are totally unaware of side effects of the phenol. People's main aim is to kill bacteria. They do not understand that, while killing bacteria, they are getting harmed with this poison. Phenol is toxic and can potentially cause a multitude of problems for you and your family. Even the Environmental Protection Agency lists disinfectants that contain phenols as "corrosive and toxic". Formaldehyde, phenol, benzene, toluene, xylene are found in common household cleaners, cosmetics, beverages, fabrics and cigarette smoke. These chemicals are cancer causing and toxic to the immune system. Drinking water containing phenol for a long period of time can cause diarrhoea, mouth sores, corrosive damage and death. Breathing in phonel can cause irritation to the respiratory tract, headaches, burning eyes, weaknees, muscle pain, anorexia, weight loss, effects on the heart. If skin comes into contact with phonel for a long time, people may get liver or kidney damage, dark urine, damage to the red blood cells. And according to the National Institutes of Health, phenol is toxic and people who are hypersensitive to it could experience death or serious side effects at very low exposures. There there are many more side effects like this.

Why are phenols acidic in nature?

Phenol can act as an acid due to it's stability as phenoxide ion. By releasing H+ ion it will form stable C6H5O- ion. The groups having +I, -I , +M , -M efffects present on phenol will effect acidic nature of phenol. As +I or +M groups which are present at ortho and at para psitions will decrease the acidic character of phenol. If they are at meta position effect is less than at para or ortho positions.Similar to this -I or -M gorups are substituted on phenol they will increase the acidic nature. so, we can say that as the stability of phenoxide ion increases acidic nature of phenol also increases.Phenol can act as an acid due to it's stability as phenoxide ion.
