It's pretty safe, except it can gives your food an odd flavor, a nasty crunch, and in extreme cases you can pick up iron oxide splinters. Additionally, food sticks more to a rusty grill. Better, get a good wire brush and maybe a grill stone (or even a wire wheel!) and remove the rust from your grill. Or -- get a new grill!

∙ 8y agoNo, you should season the rusty grill first, by scraping off as much rust from the rack as possible, brush oil on the rack, or spray generously with cooking spray, then let sit in flames for a while. When the flames die down, brush it with wire grill brush to remove any particles. Following these instructions should give you a good, clean, smooth rack surface.
