The history of the internet can be traced back to the 1960s and the creation of the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency, often called DARPA. They wanted to set up a communications system that enabled communication to be maintained even if some of the system was knocked out. This would have been in the time of the Cold War. They also wanted different places of study to be able to share resources better, as there were very few powerful computers around. In 1969 four computers connected to each other, at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Stanford Research Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and The University of Utah. The first message was sent on the 29th of October between UCLA and Stanford. From there more and more computer systems joined or set up their own networks. By the 1980s there were many networks around, but not all could communicate with each other. It was decided then to standardise the system and in 1989 that led to the internet being formally created. The World Wide Web, which many people people mistakenly think is the internet, did not come into existence until the early 1990s.
