Apart from soil, fertilisers contain nutrients in the form of compounds which can release nitrogen, phosphate and potassium into the soil. They may also provide compounds of calcium, magnesium and sulphur.

Fertilisers vary in their composition. Since most plants need fairly large amounts of Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus, these are the main constituents of common fertilisers. Some have only these three; others contain very small amounts of trace elements. Also some products contain only a variety of trace elements, and are used in small quantities - maybe a teaspoonful in conjunction with a large bag of common fertiliser. Caution. Plants that are native to Australia generally require very little Phosphorus. Adding a fertiliser that contains Phosphorus may harm the plant ; consult a book or an expert.
