The most obvious issues addressed in the 1962 Pulitzer Prize winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" are the evils of racial intolerance, bigotry and prejudice in the depression-era American South. But there are more subtle, richer, messages as well. Atticus Finch represents the small minority of Southerners who are not of the intolerant and bigoted mind set. Atticus is a wise and gentle small-town Alabama lawyer of 1932, raising his motherless offspring and defending a Black man who is falsely accused of rape. His decision to defend Robinson is based upon his principles and is made despite knowing that the narrow minded society would turn against him and try to make his life difficult and agonizing. Tom Robinson's trial displays the ugliness of racism. He is an innocent Black man who is wrongly accused of raping a poor White woman. In fact, he is a victim of the White woman's effort to hide her guilt by utilizing the strong racial attitudes towards Blacks. The character Boo Radley shows how easy it is to misjudge people and dismiss them because they are different. Boo is mentally retarded and is ostracized by society. He is an object of fear and curiosity for children because he is different from others. But he is the one who marks the ultimate climax of the novel. "To Kill a Mockingbird" also portrays the innocence of children. A girl's recollection of her childhood days which are still at their full bloom in her mind reveals not only the innocence of juvenile minds, but of some adult minds as well. She recalls a period where mostly immature minds become curious to the racial bigotry and how sometimes mature minds become its prey. She recalls a time when harsh realities of life like intolerance, bigotry, prejudice and the adversities of society gradually dawn upon her. Atticus Finch doesn't just love his children, he respects them. The novel tells of the ingenuity, purity and innocence of children with with a unique inspirational interaction with their father.

Some major conflicts in "To Kill a Mockingbird" include racial injustice between white and black communities, social inequality, and the loss of innocence. The trial of Tom Robinson serves as a focal point for these conflicts in the novel.

man vs man, man vs is enviroment, and man vs himself

The major conflict in To Kill a Mockingbird is that Tom Robinson, an African American man is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus, is Scout's (the main character) father. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, even though many cases of that time where blacks were accused, usually lost. The blacks were usually hung, or sentenced to cruel and unusual punishment. Tom Robinson is falsely accused of raping Mayella, even though it was brought to court.

Atticus trying to convince the rest of the town that the black man who is blamed for the white lady's rape is innocent.

That would be Man vs. Society.

The story was about social hypocrisy surrounding mock-trials-- thus the term "Mockingbird," which mimicks other sounds, the way that unfair trials mimick justice: i.e. both give the mere appearance of the actual thing.

In this story, the prosecutor and police subject a suspect to an unfair trial, and he is found guilty despite being clearly innocent, and it's clear that the trial was just for show since the mob was against him.

Show-trials have been a hallmark of false justice throughout time, dating back to before the time of Christ-- who was likewise executed by mock-trial, despite having broken no laws worthy of execution.

Such trials serve the dual-purpose of catering to mob-sentiment, while preserving the appearance of justice, since the majority will often ignore an unfair trial if it harms an unpopular person.

Show-trials can also be used to enforce the law selectively, such as prior to the American Revolution-- thus the Declaration of Independence listing the absolution of British soldiers by "mock-trial" for murders committed against the colonists.

social and moral conflict between race and justice. its been a while since I've read it though.
There are many conflicts, but the themes of conflict are racial justice and being different. Mainly the story focuses on how both Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are being treated, but themes like interracial marriage, parent-child relationships, and inequality are also addressed.
