The secret service does not live in the White House. Actually it would be more appropriate to say that secret service agents do not live in the White House. The US Secret Service is tasked with Presidential security and there are numerous agents on duty at all times, at the white house and wherever the president is or will soon be. Like any other job, when the agents are not on duty, they go home to their families. If they are traveling with the president then they are provided with hotel rooms.
Yes, "secret agents" are employed by government departments around the world although their actual job title is likely to something a little more mundane.
It will be pretty easy with military experience to get a public service job.
Secret Service agents go through rigorous training to perform their job effectively. All agents must go through about 7 months worth of training when they are initially hired. Once an agent has gone through the initial training, if they want to be on a protection detail, they must work in a field office for six to eight years. After spending six to eight years in the field, agents will then be transferred to work on a protection detail for three to five years. During this time, both in the field and on a protection detail, agents are encouraged and at times required to take classes offered both by the secret service and by other law enforcement agencies. The Secret Service is like anyone else in government- they have their personal opinions on things. But when they go to work, they are expected to do their job, regardless of those opinions. From what I've heard, the Secret Service generally likes Obama- he's a nice guy and is usually easy for them to get along with. I've even heard an anecdote about the President and First Lady breaking protocol to invite Secret Service agents to Thanksgiving dinners at the White House, a gesture which the agents appreciated.
