I'm not an expert in the field or anything, but i do have a very good opinion on it.

I'm 17 and me and my other brothers were abused by my father,

some long term effects of it can be that the child might adopt the abusive patterns of the parent, and also the child can be emotionally abused or psychologically abused. which In my opinion are the worst of the type

emotionally, the child can have problems with trusting others, and again pick up habits from the parents. they might develop habits such as the parent picking apart the child's appearance nonstop might give the child a negative self image and destroy the self esteem and they might think they are worthless. (theres a difference between this and being humble, sometimes hard to spot) the child might become shy or despondent from others.

also emotional abuse ties in with psychological abuse too, psychological abuse can be very bad and hard to help others with, the parents might tell the child lies all the time, which makes them less trusting. or the parent might guilt trip the child into doing things, or saying things for the benefit of the parent. also, the parent can try "shelter the child" from reality but not letting them have a social life of their own. this is also a very bad thing, because the child will become rebellious or dependent on the parent (Stockholm Syndrome is kind of like this)

there is alot more about this, and don't get me wrong, physical abuse is also a horbile thing, but each has their setbacks and it also depends on the degree of it

also, this doesn't just apply to parents, it can be friends, family members, siblings or anybody!

but the best thing to do is to address the problem, we can try help families one at a time, but we must show the children who were put through this, that it's not right, that's they alone must break the cycle. its good to help a family but who is to say that

one family is worse off then the next. everyone has family problems whether they admit it or not.

there is also sexual abuse, and many other forms of abuse. if you want i can go into deeper detail about certain aspects. but keep in mind I'm only 17 and this is to my limited knowledge also.

(but i think this answer should help you out a bit)

Is prolonged the same as longterm?

No, not really, but Prolonged is sort of a word to use when someone has a dragging illness or something. Good question. Something that is longterm is permanent but something that is prolonged will go on for a while and eventually stop. EX: the longterm effects of smoking are____. The Prolonged illness went on for 3 years but then it was cured.
