He also wishes to fool others into thinking that he is great and worthy of worship, so he will call himself whatever suits his purpose. He also likes to paint himself as a mythological figure with a red suit and a tail carrying a pitchfork, so that people will think he is a joke and so be deceived that way.

Satan is a formal name for the devil and means adversary, signifying that he wages war with the truth and all who obey its principles. All other names are derived from mans interpretation of his character . Other names are Baal, Baarlim, and of course Devil and Beelzebub. This name for Satan signifies his position as the prince or chief of the devils.

Few people know that he was also called Son Of The Morning, signifying the high position which he held in the preexistence before he was cast out.

For clarification, the following extracts from Isaiah (KJV) show that Second Isaiah was exulting about the defeat and death of the king of Babylon, who had, in his thoughts, planned to join the stars after his death - just as the great heroes of Greece once did. Instead, he went to the grave, the worms covered him and he will go to hell. Isaiah 14:4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

Isaiah 14:6 He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.

The reason Satan has so many names is the same reason God has so many names. One name or definition does not and cannot properly define the deity. Satan means hostility, devil means accuser, Beelzebub is a derivative of Baal, he is a murderer, thief, and liar. all these things are Satan's name because that is what he IS. God is known as the I AM, the alpha and Omega, the great physician because that is who he IS and therefore are his names. If it helps think of them more as definitions than names.

Lucifer
Isaiah chapter 14 talks of the pomp and splendour of the king of Babylon, who had ruled the nations in anger, and his fate after his overthrow by the king of Persia. He had compared himself to the morning star (Lucifer, from Latin) and had thought that he would ascend into heaven and sit among the stars, but was now himself persecuted. He has become weak and like one of us; he will go to hell. This passage was misunderstood by early Christians as discussing the devil, and so Lucifer became another Christian name for Satan. This is an interpretation of Isaiah with which Judaism has never agreed.
