We seek medical help for ourselves and our families, and we trust that the trained medical proffessionals will have our best interests at heart. We do not believe that a person's health should be left to faith or prayers alone as some religions teach. But when we get sick, we are encouraged to go seek medical help.

The ONLY prohibition that we observe is what we percieve to be the Bible's view on the use of blood. At Acts 15: 28,29, The Bible states to abstain from blood. In view of this, and other Bible verses, we do not accept blood transfusions. However, we do accept non-blood substances in place of blood transfusions, as long as real blood is not used.

In the field of non-blood treatment, there have been fantastic advances to the point now, where the use of real blood is almost always not actually needed. Some entire hospitals have now converted completely to not using blood at all for transfusions. A non-witness website called noblood.org gives a lot of information about this. We love life and health, and so we seek and accept medical help as needed. We accept almost all treatments offered.

We only reject blood transfusions or the infusion of the major componants of blood. We do accept the safer alternatives to this, and as a result often have a quicker recovery than those who take blood. There has been a great deal of advancement in recent years of non blood alternative at many hospitals around the world, and even the US Military is now looking into non blood treatment.

Some individuals may reject various other medical treatments for other personal non-religious reasons, but our religious view is as outlined.

All are born of sin and therefore also die from sin. We all are sinful and make mistakes. Some are more serious than others. The Bible clarifies these types of sins. However, Jehovah God knows we are all sinful and make mistakes. This is the very reason for his son Jesus Christ sacrificing his life in our behalf so the we might have hope. Because our bodies are sinful, we grow old and die. We succumb to sicknesses and illness until that day comes (very soon), in which all sin and death and illnesses will become a thing of the past. That time have come. It is like your are making that perfect cake. The first two cakes are made perfectly. The mold that you made the cake in falls and creates a small dent. This dent is imperfection. Since then this cake mold cannot create a perfect cake until it is repaired. Jesus became that replacement cake mold, a perfect one.

Jehovah's Witnesses believe illness is caused by congenital defects, genetic abnormalities, harmful environmental factors, or a combination of the above. The causes of some illnesses is to date unknown while others are preventable through wise lifestyle choices. Jehovah's Witnesses do no believe illness to be a direct punishment from God to either the parents or a child. Ultimately, they hold all sicknesses are simply part of the human condition bought about by the original rebellion in Eden of Adam and Eve and passed on through the human genetic code.

Satan and demons are not believed to be the cause of illness or birth defects. The Watchtower September 1, 1999 states:

"In almost every instance, the only connection between Satan and human illness is the fact that Satan tempted the first human couple, and they fell into sin. He [Satan]and his demons are not the direct cause of each and every malady."

Jehovah's Witnesses WELCOME medical treatments. We realize the value.

Under that umbrella:

Each individual decides their own medical path.

We go to the doctor for check-ups; surgery; advice; etc. We have our children born at the hospital; and we take them to the doctor for regular check-ups.

We have blood tests; take biopsies; take immunizations; etc etc.

We even accept transfusions.

In fact there are many Jehovah's Witnesses who are doctors, surgeons, specialists, nurses, etc etc.

Many of us choose 'alternative natural' health avenues; but that's not a policy, nor a recommendation; it's a personal choice.

The only restriction we find in Jehovah's Holy Word The Bible, is the mandate upon Christians to 'Abstain from blood'. We adhere to that very strictly, as we adhere to other things mentioned in the Bible (ie to 'abstain from fornication', etc)

This usually presents no problem for as, since any medical situation or procedure can be done by skilled surgeons without the use of blood. Some untrained ones in the medical profession, may not have the skills, so they resort to what has been labeled as 'death-dealing blood transfusions' (instead of 'life-saving transfusions. 'Life-saving' is a misnomer.)

If you type in "bloodless surgery" into Answers.com, you will get a wealth of information; and then many LINKS to some valuable information, which the general public is not informed about.

Jehovah's Witnesses are proactive in caring for their health and often consult with medical health professionals for their individual needs. Preventative medicine includes screenings, immunizations, vitamins and other methods to help them stay healthy. These are decisions made by individuals, according to their consciences.
