As an U.S. expatriot, here is what I've discovered:
"It's a clean and well run country." Not exactly: environmental record is worse than the U.S. with oil sands of Alberta being an enormous contributor to global warming; Ontario is one of the most politically currupt places in North America (even worse than Quebec or Louisiana in a lot of instances) and has a very disorderly an unattractive public realm (Toronto used to be referred to as "New York run by the Swiss" -- not anymore -- this town's a wreck!)
"Canada is a very liberal, progressive country." Again, not exactly. In some ways Canada is well ahead of much of the world in terms of human rights, but with an increasingly heavy concentration of immigrants from very conservative countries (Middle East, Africa, Asia), the possibility is that the country could turn decisively to the Right if this trend continues. Also, the Conservatives have been in power for a number of years now, and Stephen Harper, the uber-conservative Prime Minister makes George Bush look like a Massachusetts liberal -- plus he's smart, so that makes him even more dangerous.
