As of 2009, Uranus has 27 known moons, which are named after characters from works by William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. (Not one is named Romeo.) The five largest moons of Uranus are Titania, Oberon, Umbriel, Ariel, and Miranda. The other 22 are quite small.
Titania and Oberon were discovered in 1789 by William Herschel.
Ariel and Umbriel were discovered in 1851 by William Lassell.
Miranda was discovered in 1948 by Gerard Kuiper.
The remaining moons were discovered after 1985.
The 13 inner moons are intricately involved with the 13 rings of Uranus.
