Some have mental problems and enjoy causing others physical and/or emotional pain. And then they kill them.

∙ 11y agoThe standard motives for murder have not changed over the centuries. The standard reasons for homicide are greed, lust, power, fear, and rage. Serial killers may have other more twisted reasons far too varied to be listed. Mass killers are usually rage and/or power.
Government statistics reveal that most murders result from disputes, committed with guns, the victims male between 20-24 years of age. I've heard emergency room personnel refer to their standard gunshot victims as suffering from 'testosterone poisoning'. See the link below for the FBI breakdown for murder types; the group that has the highest number of murders (and murders by firearms) is labeled as 'other arguments'.

This category far exceeds the murders due to rape, robbery, motor vehicle theft, arson, romantic triangles, brawl due to alcohol, brawl due to narcotics, disputes over money or property, gangland killings, or juvenile gang killings. The highest number of victims falls into the 20-24 year old age group and are 86% male; the highest number are killed by firearm, 67%.

Some people decide to commit a crime and carefully plan everything in advance to increase gain and decrease risk. These people are making choices about their behavior; some even consider a life of crime better than a regular job-believing crime brings in greater rewards, admiration, and excitement-at least until they are caught. Others get an adrenaline rush when successfully carrying out a dangerous crime. Others commit crimes on impulse, out of rage or fear.
The desire for material gain (money or expensive belongings) leads to property crimes such as robberies, burglaries, white-collar crimes, and auto thefts. The desire for control, revenge, or power leads to violent crimes such as murders, assaults, and rapes. These violent crimes usually occur on impulse or the spur of the moment when emotions run high. Property crimes are usually planned in advance.

Well, that's a good question. Why does anyone kill? There are plenty of theories, but barely any of them cover the motives of convicted serial killers.
