Names of All AstronautsClick on the related link below for all the names of astronauts.
  • There have been a few hundred astronauts over the years, far too many to list here. You might be able to get a comprehensive list by writing to the Johnson Space center in Houston, but I don't know if even they have one.
  • The only ones you need to know: John Glenn, Lovell, Neil Armstong and Buzz Aldrin.
  • Not necesarily true. There are many more even more important guys to remember. Jim Lovell, Frank Borman, and Jim Anders were the first to leave Earth and go to the Moon. Dave Scott and Neil Armstrong were the first to do an orbital rendevouz and hard docking. And Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin did much of the development theory on orbital rendevouz techniques that made the whole Apollo moon mission scheme possible. He also perfected many of the practicalities for EVA activities (spacewalks) while outside the space capsule on Gemini 12 mission. All of these guys contributed a lot of important stuff to the program. Al Shepard may have been the first guy in space, but when he took over the Apollo 14 mission in what amounted to a "power grab", he drove the mission into the ground making it a personal affair to get himself to the moon. He didn't take the scientific aspects of the mission seriously, neglecting to study those details properly. As a result, that particular mission was one of the least successful scientifically. The 15 through 17 missions were scientific goldmines.
  • Mercury astronauts were, in order of flights Al Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glen, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, and Gordo Cooper. Deke Slayton as one of the original 7, but he was bumped from the flight roster for cardiac anomalies. Slayton became an important administrative head to the astronauts thoughout much of the early program.
  • Gemini astronauts were, in order of flights Gus Grissom & John Young GT3, Jim McDivitt & Ed White GT4, Pete Conrad & Gordo Cooper GT5, Frank Borman & Jim Lovell GT7, Wally Schirra & Tom Stafford GT6, Neil Armstrong & Dave Scott GT8, Tom Stafford & Gene Cernan GT9, John Young & Mike Collins GT10, Pete Conrad & Richard Gordon GT11, Jim Lovell & "Buzz" Aldrin GT12. Gus Grissom & Ed White died later in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967, along with Roger Chaffee, who never got to fly in space.
  • Apollo astronauts were, in order of flights Wally Schirra, Walt Cunningham, Donn Eisele Apollo 7, Frank Borman, Bill Anders, Jim Lovell Apollo 8, Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott, Rusty Scheickart Apollo 9, Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, John Young Apollo 10, Neil Armstrong, "Buzz" Aldrin, Mike Collins Apollo 11, Pete Conrad, Al Bean, Richard Gordon Apollo 12, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, John Swigert Apollo 13, Al Shepard, Stu Roosa, Ed Mitchell Apollo 14, Dave Scott, Jim Irwin, Al Worden Apollo 15, John Young, Charlie Duke, Tom Mattingly Apollo 16, Gene Cernan, Harry Schmitt, Ron Evans Apollo 17. Rick Gordon was supposed to go in Harry Schmitt's slot, but he was bumped for political reasons before the mission took off. Nine more guys flew for Skylab, but the only ones I can remember at this time are Pete Conrad SL1, Al Bean, Owen Garriott, Jack Lousma SL3, HTH
