It depends on the activity level and other factors. The "eight glasses of water a day" recommendation that everyone needs at least eight glasses of water a day is a myth. Fluid intake (including the moisture content of food) should equal the amount of liquid lost during the day, from perspiration, expiration and urination. During times of physical exertion or warm weather, people should take extra care in remaining hydrated. Elderly people sometimes have difficulty regulating their fluid consumption and should take additional care in making sure they remain hydrated during hot times, as they are also more frail and susceptible to heat stroke.

Average daily intake for an adult is 1200-1500 ml and the output should be equivalent to the intake.

The partial answer of 1200-1500 ml seems to only address intake of oral fluids and output of urine fluids. A more complete answer includes fluid input from food and fluid output from stools, perspiration and respiration.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends that, per day, you consume:

  • 2 litres for Women
  • 2.5 litres for Men

This fluid can come from all form of drinks and even moisture from food, but it is only a guideline. Exercising or any other form of physical exertion will use up your water supplies, and so should be replenished whenever you feel thirsty.
