What are the origins of the Spanish language?

The Spanish language developed from Latin.

Latin, in turn derived from Romance, which also gave rise to Portuguese and the German derivatives. All these are referred to as Romance languages.

Most of the European languages are Indo-Euroean languages. Exceptions include the Finno-Ugrian Languages (Finnish and Hungarian). The main families are (1) the Slavic (Russian, Polish, Slovenian etc.), (2)The Germanic (English, Norwegian, Dutch, German, etc.) and (3) the Romance Languages which are spoken in Countries which had been occupied by the Romans for a long time: French, Italian, Portuguese, SPANISH, Romanian, etc.)
