The Spanish language developed mainly from Latin.75% of the Spanish language is Latin in origin. The other 25% is mainly from Arabic. In the Americas, the native languages have had a huge influence on the language. The are hints of Germanic influence (mainly from Visigoth). Influence from Basque and Celtic languages is debatable. French has had a small effect on Spanish.

it is closely related to Latin

Spanish originated in Spain. It's the net product of more than 2000 years of linguistic inputs from multiple ethnic groups, including, but not limited to, Iberians, Sueves, Alani, Phoenicians, Visigoths, Celts, Moors, Hebrews, Romans, Greeks, Carthaginians, Franks, and others.

The spanish language is a Romance. We call "Romance" to those languages that are derivated from the Latin. After the fall of the western Roman Empire, the differents parts of the empire become more isolated each others. So, in this differents regions, different derivations of the latin lenguage were born. About the Xth Century the first texts writen in spanish appeared in northern Spain. The spanish language is also called castilian (castellano) because its origins are in the county of Castila, that after a time become the Kingdom of Castile, spreading the spanish language around the most part of Spain and, after 1492, to the Americas.

Rome fell because of Germanic invaders attacking Rome, running away from the Huns, who were following swiftly and leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. people all over Italy, and especially from Rome, ran to the country to avoid the bloodshed. Latin-speaking people ran to areas where the people spoke other languages. Latin adapted and transformed into the vernacular Romance languages, and Spanish is one of these.

Latin, as do all Romance languages, which are: English, Romanian, Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and related languages.

Spanish also has an extensive Greek component and a very substantital Arabic component. Expressions like "Ojala" and a word like "pijama" all derive from Spanish's Arabic connections.

Spanish is derived mostly from Latin. The Romans used many Greek words, so Greek also has a major influence. The Moors (Arabs) occupied most of Spain for some 700 years, so the is a strong Arabic influence as well.
