There are several personal traits required to hold the position, (have a friendly and professional attitude, good communications skills, good memory or the ability to remember your checklist and safety procedures). Beyond that I would say the most important attribute is the ability to remain calm and take charge of a situation during emergencies or unforseen events that may develop during the course of the flight.

Patient, understanding and tolerant. You will meet all kinds of people with differing expectations. Many passengers and crew for that matter will think they're a little more important than everyone else (especially you). To deal with this, cabin crew would need maturity and the abiility to reWell, to begin with, the hours can be long and irregular. The work can be tiring, the passengers demanding or even abusive. The atmosphere in the aircraft at altitude is extremely drying. Snowstorms, labor disputes, or mechanical breakdowns can disrupt schedules. Perhaps your plans to attend your friends' wedding will be spoiled by a storm that traps you in Des Moines. And there is the constant fear of a crash, although statistics say you have a better chance of being hit by lightening than experiencing a plane crash. This is more than a career choice. This is a lifestyle change to which you must give careful thought.main calm under pressure.

it depends on which cabin crew and on what kind of flights you're on. some cabin crew (varies from country to country) carry food items from back home. most cabin crew take on (a) change(s) of clothing (depending on the days they're away), toiletries, shoe polish, a clothes brush, a travel iron, an international adapter, a calculater, curling tongs and other items to enhance your looks if you're a lady crew member and something to keep you occupied on your lay over (a good book is always a favourite), an mp3 player for your favourite music, .... oh yes, i always carried a corkscrew and a pen knife for use on board, but that was back in the good old days when restrictions were not in place.
on short haul flights some crew members will bring their own home made sandwiches as airline food (even for the crew) is not all that healthy.
