Biotechnology is the devlopment of industrial processes using lving organisms or the modification of living organisms for industrial purposes.

Examples of Biotechnology:-

  1. Brewing, without biotechnology (the use of yeast to ferment sugars) there would be no beer, no wine, no vodka, no whiskey. Ethanol - the alcohol produced in brewing - is also used in laboratories as a sterilising agent.
  2. Making cheese and yoghurt, these are produced from milk.
  3. Manufacture of drugs and medicines - human insulin for the treatment of Diabetes is manufactured by genetically modified bacteria, this insulin is better suited to the previous method of extracting insulin from the pancreas of pigs, not only as this insulin was more suited to the human body but also meant that this treatment was available to those who could not use pig's insulin for moral or religious reasons, vegetarians, Jews or Muslims for example

The disadvantages for using genetic modification in agriculture are:

1. Some people are allergic to GM

Note: Many genetically modified crops are enhanced by introducing a fish or peanut protein. This is the reason people think GM foods give people allergic reactions. The protein is isolated from the organism, it is a simple protein it does not contain all of the things a fish would have when you consume it.

2. Genes might flow by wind or be carried by animals to contaminate nearby plants, however this is no different from natural hybridization and cross-pollination.

3. Scientists worries that plant-eating insects and weeds will develop resistance to BT crops leading to the creation of super-bags or weeds that cannot be destroyed, this is a fact of life for any resistant strains of crops -- pests always adapt to pest control methods and new methods are developed - indeed the use of antibiotics in hospitals has led to "super bugs" such as MRSA and hospitals emphasising to staff and visitors the use of hygiene to prevent infections rather than stronger or different antibiotics to cure these infections.

4. Some people argued that BT crops maybe poisonous to wildlife or humans

Do your research please, this is a lie, no way would it be legal to sell a product for consumption that is known to be harmful to people. These crops are modified to be herbicide resistant, drought resistant, vitamin enriched etc. We tell people these are the things we modify them to be yet everyone has their opinions even when it comes to scientific fact.

5. Companies often hold patents on GM seeds and licence and protect these patents. Meaning that the genome (including the human genome) is copyrighted. God is yet to sue for prior art.

However, it could also be argued that GM crops have advantages too. Seeds could be modified to grow in conditions where naturally they wouldn't, this arugment is often used to support the use of GM crops in the 3rd world where staple crops such as wheat or barley do not grow so readily.

I recommend researching Norman Borlaug and reading about how his hybrid wheat strains saved hundreds of millions of lives and prevented mass famine in Mexico and Asia. "Golden rice" is an example of "biofortification" -- a rice strain containing extra dietary vitamin A that has helped prevent blindness from vitamin A deficiencies in millions of children in third world nations.

the advantages of gene take are we can produce a better plant for an example we can produce a durian with no seed, this will benefit the consumer beause they can enjoy the durian more while the producer also gain benefit because the durian does not have seed so consumer or buyer cannot plan it,if they want it they have to buy this will make the seller gain benefit.

either gene technology for plant is good but not for human or animal, why i said like this this is because if scientist are allowed to hybrid animal freely they will produce new species of animal but actual they have done it,they had produce a new animal called liger that is form from the hybrid of Mali lion and female tiger(tigress). The size of this liger is twice the size of its parent and stronger. this is very dangerous it like they had form a monster.

gene tech also cannot been done for human because it can cause war. this can be proof by watcing the anime of gundam. war happen between 2 type of human the natural that think they are the original one and the coordinator that think they are perfect and better than natural because they are born by using the gene technology.

maybe certain people will think i was not matured because relating the real world issue with a cartoon but seriouusly the cartoon situation and our situation will be the same if gene tech is done for human. in the cartoon the coordinator parent are using gene tech to make their child pretty, smart, strong than the natural. with the perfctioist the coordinator become arrogant and the natural jealous with they perfectionist and that make them fight and at the end causing war to happen.this also will happen to us if gene tech is done for human.
