Pro = excellent source of protein. Relatively inexpensive source of calories. Some of the nutrients in meat are hard to obtain in a vegan diet. Raising animals for meat allows use of some parts of the world that are not suitable for farming. The human digestive system has been adapting to a diet of cooked meat for 1.5 million years.

Cons = meats are high on the food chain, and tend to concentrate the "bad stuff" (toxins, antibiotics and chemicals in the animal feed). Also, saturated fat content can promote coronary artery disease. Meats are generally high in saturated fats. Large dairy, hog, beef, and chicken operations can be sources of outbreaks of disease that are hard to contain. Raising beef and hogs generates incredible quantities of manure which gets into water supplies and increases bacterial contamination. Beef, in particular, is very inefficient. A steer consumes 10 calories of food for every calorie of meat.

I'm a vegetarian and here are a few of the pros and cons that i could think of. Pros:

- being vegetarian is good for the environment

- it's also good for the animals you would otherwise eat

- it makes you more conscious of your diet, and CAN be healthier

-Makes you feel better about what you're eating

Cons:

- harder to get some of the nutrients you need, vitamin B12, protein and iron especially. EDIT:I have been a vegetarian for about 8 months, I am as Healthy as I have ever been and have not once needed to take vitamins. To help this veggie ready meals and things like lentils and nuts are good.

- harder to plan your meals, takes a while to get used to

- harder to eat out at restaurants, especially if you avoid all dairy products

Pros:

  • you can eat all kinds of fast food
  • it is generally easier, more available
  • if you've grown up with meat you won't have to learn new foods
  • buying meat from local small farms supports your local economy

Cons:

  • it isn't as healthy as a well-balanced vegetarian diet, eg higher cholesterol, hormones in the meat
  • a meat based diet uses ten times more resources in terms of land and water than a plant based diet. A great deal of world hunger could be averted if people switched to a plant based diet and resources were shared.
  • massive environmental damage is caused by the meat industry, such as deforesting rain forest for cattle grazing and polluting rivers with hog farm waste
  • The majority of large fish species are on the verge of extinction and scientists warn that the oceans will be almost completely dead within decades. Eating fish contributes to this extinction.
  • the modern meat industry and factory farms inflict suffering on animals - they can smell the death in the air and live in fear. Meat eaters then eat these poor animals that had wretched lives. Is this really what you want to put in your body?
