What are the psalms about?

Each Psalms are different you can't compare them at all. The Psalms are King David Praising The Lord Our God You might notice that people in church singing hymns and psalms which come from the book of Psalms in The Bible.

The Psalms are "prayerful songs" of praise and despair... they cry out to the Lord in happiness and joy; and in desperation for succor and salvation.

As the Scriptures reveal themselves to be "God-inspired" [II Tim.3:16]... so also are the Psalms inspired by the Holy Spirit of God that cover the wide range of human emotions.

We need God in the good times as well as the bad. He demands that there be no other God before Him in our lives. But because we can't see God... He has revealed Himself to the hearts and minds of those whom He is calling through His inspired Word. The Bible is God's "instruction manual" for His Children to learn about Him [again; II Tim.3:16-17]... and to grow in Righteous, Godly Character.

We also need instruction in "how to pray to Him"... because this too is foreign to our nature; but is a communication with Him that needs to be mastered by His Children.

So, the Psalms are Holy Spirit "INSPIRED PRAYERS" that He has given His Children to USE to cry out to Him, as their human frailties and weaknesses assault them -- or for an outlet when their joy and elation over His abundant blessings become too much to contain.

Paul reveals it this way:

" ...the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the Children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

"Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the [Holy] Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as Sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this Hope we were saved. But Hope that is seen is no Hope at all. Who Hopes for what he already has? But if we Hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

"In the same way, the [Holy] Spirit HELPS US IN OUR WEAKNESS. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit itself intercedes for us with groanings that words cannot express. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with His will." (Rom.8:21-27 NIV)

The Psalms are part of "GOD'S INTERCESSION" on behalf of His elect. They are another of God's gifts, to be USED BY HIS CHILDREN... to cry out to Him!!!

"O LORD, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! ...To the LORD I cry aloud, and He answers me from His holy hill." (Ps.3:1-4 NIV)

"Answer me when I call you, O my Righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear MY PRAYER." (Ps.4:1 NIV)

"Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for TO YOU I PRAY." (Ps.5:1-2 NIV)

"O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" (Ps.8:1 NIV)

"Give thanks to the LORD,, for He is good; His Love endures forever." (Ps.118:1 NIV)

"Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees." (Ps.119:12 NIV)

"May your unfailing Love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant. Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law is my delight." (Ps.119:76-77 NIV)

"Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to Him with tambourine and harp. For the LORD takes delight in His people; He crowns the humble with Salvation. Let the saints rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds." (Ps.149:3-5 NIV)

The Psalms are "instructional prayers" that God is loaning to us for practice in communicating with Him... until we learn to humbly cry out to Him in sincerity from our heart.

"All Scripture [including the Psalms] is God-breathed and is useful for teaching..." (II Tim.3:16 NIV).

The Psalms teach us how to pray.

Some facts about Psalms?? Well I know that there are 150 poems altogether in Psalms, and about half of them David wrote. Psalms is the Greek word for "music of the lyre" or "songs sung to a harp". So it's a book in the bible after Job and before Proverbs, which are also poetic books in the bible.
