Hurricanes are a massive system of thunderstorms that circle around a focal point, usually called the 'eye'. They can reach humongous proportions, like with Katrina, which covered hundreds of miles. These storms usually take days and sometimes weeks in forming out over the warm bodies of water that is either the Atlantic, or the Pacific Ocean. Tornadoes, by comparison, form quickly, and die quickly as well. the largest tornadoes rarely exceed 1 mile across with the largest ever recorded at 2.5 miles. Additionally, while a hurricane is its own storm system a tornado is a product of a large parent storm which is itself usually part of a larger system.

Another notable difference between the two types of storms have to do with the speed of the winds they produce. The strongest hurricanes are Category 5, with top winds up to 190 miles per hour. EF5 tornadoes, in comparison, can have winds that exceed 200 miles per hour and in rare instances can exceed 300 mph.
