The number of credits it takes to complete an Associates Degree in general will depend on the state mandate, and your program of study. As an example, the amount of credits required to complete an Associates Degree in the state of New Jersey is now 64. However, there are some programs that require much more, to include an Associate of Science degree as a Registered nurse, Respiratory Therapist or Dental Hygienists to name a few. These programs will require - in some cases - completion of credits well into the seventies. Usually this is because of the professional phase courses needed to complete the degree. All in all the Associates degree is designed to be a two year program provided the student follows the curriculum layout as prescribed. Most all Community Colleges today are open Admissions, meaning the college is open to all individuals 18 years of age or older, and individuals who have a High School Diploma or GED. Please be advised, that Community Colleges have some programs that are competitive. In this instance, you must check with the department from were the program emanates from and ask for the specific prerequisite course work and any other requirements needed.
You can find the requirements for most any field of study and the requirements by going to www.collegeboard.com/splash/ and using their College MatchMaker search engine. You can search by school, major, and location. It will provide you with a list of schools, the school background, requirements, tuition and fees, etc.
