When close relatives marry, their children are more likely to have a genetic disease or malformation. Such an outcome is by no means guaranteed, but its liklihood is increased over what it is for parents who are not closely related. "Closely related" would include siblings, of course, and is often considered to include first cousins, although marriages of first cousins have not been uncommon in history. Second cousins and more distant relatives are less likely to share genetics that produce these problems, but people who are from different parts of the earth are even less likely to do so.

My parents are married as second cousins...and I don't think I have found any flaw in their marriage. It just keeps our family tied together...

And I think it makes me embarrassed to say that my parents are cousins in this century. . .

The first and most severe disadvantage would be the in-breeding if children were expected. The shared genetics could cause their offspring to have a limited range of genes. This could result in infertility, genetic disorders, low Birth Rate, high infant mortality, and lowered immune system. The second disadvantage would just be criticism from family or friends who consider it "wrong". Though in-breeding is a logical reason to not reproduce in a close blood relationship, what anyone thinks of your relationship is a matter completely left to you. No person can tell you who to love unless you let them.

When closely related individuals conceive children, the genes inherited by the child may cause problems due to the lack of genetic diversity. That increases the appearance of recessive traits. It should be noted that it is legal in the United States to marry a first cousin. The laws vary in different countries. Some countries allow sibling marriage as long as the couple does not have children.

There is a slight risk that certain genetic defects can be reinforced and cause some deformities with first cousins and it is much less with second cousins. In a few states first cousins cannot get married.
