Let me start by saying I LOVE MY NOSE RING, however sometimes I think all the pain and ugliness and annoying cleaning routines wasn't worth it. Getting the piercing wasn't terrible. My nose bleed a fair amount because I drink too many energy drinks? Or so the piercer said. When the ring or stud is put it its a little uncomfortable because of the pushing and moving the piercer must do to get the stud in. Also your eyes water a fair amount, because piercing your nose is similar to getting punched in the nose in the sense it makes your eyes water. This is quite embarrassing but my piercer had to remove some "boogies" from my nose which was a wee bit awkward because he was cute. Cleaning your nose is annoying, BUT CANNOT BE OVERLOOKED!

You have to spray it several times a day with a nasal or saline spray (salt water) or you can simply use liquid antni bacterial soap mixed with warm water to make your own cleaner. You should also clean your nose with a medicated hand soap while in the shower. It will make your skin dry and the soap may sting a bit but its very effective in preventing infections. Within the first few days you will have what i like to call "crusties" around your nose.

Its similar to the the stuff you have in your eyes in the morning. However after having the piercing for a few weeks if you begin to experience this again you may have an infection. Infections are easily curable with cleaning and in some cases antibiotics. You'll know you have an infection if your nose becomes red and irritated and a puss like substance comes out of your piercing. It's important to nip an infection in the butt, because if an infection goes untreated it can lead to a brain infection.. which can ultimately lead to death.

But this is very very very rare. However some people say they do experience headaches when there nose ring was infected. I believe the greatest risk in a nose piercing is the risk of developing a hypertrophic reaction. A hypertrophic reaction is a small red pimple like sore that will appear on the side of your nose ring on the inside or outside of your nostril. There is a cure to getting rid of hypertrophic reaction but I've discovered a few methods that work towards making it completely disappear or decrease in size.

I had a large hypertrophic reaction on the outside of my nose ring. It was ugly, it was all crusted and gross and red and painful, and from time to time it bleed. When it developed I made sure i cleaned more regularly and spent more time on cleaning however this was enough.

For nearly 3 weeks a used a combination of these things and my hypertrophic reaction went away completely leaving no mark. Over about a week a watched my hypertrophic reaction disappear (thank god!) Those are the risk of nose piercings it's a lovely piercing to have however i recommend a ring to start, because its far easier to clean and less uncomfortable than a stud. I started with a stud which i regret because it was rather annoying and i kept pulling it out on my bed sheets. Good luck if you decide to get a nose ring!

If the piercing is done by a professional body piercer working in a licensed and inspected facility, using tested and approved materials and aseptic technique there is little or no danger unless you fail to follow your written aftercare instructions or change the jewellery to garbage jewellery too soon.

Piercing gun piercings lead to infection, allergic reactions and the nostril is never to be pierced with a piercing gun under any circumstances, the gun was not designed nor intended to be used in that manner.

Yes. Anytime you break the skin it can become infected. Especially your nose becaues it is filled with bacteria. Keep it very clean until the piercing heals. If infection gets worse, see a doctor.

Swelling, redness, discharge of green puss, warm to the touch, painful. These are the basic signs of an infection with a piercing. The above should not be confused with the following signs: Swelling, redness, discharge of clear fluid, rash like skin discoloration, enlargement of the piercing hole by the jewellery, burning or itchiness These are signs of an allergic reaction Normal signs of correct healing: Slight discharge or whitish yellow matter, slight redness only noticed after handling the piercing, slight signs of crusty matter by the piercing exit holes. Any time you have an issue that doesn't look right to you go see your professional body piercer and ask them for advice. You have paid for a professional body piercing and the piercer should be available to consult with you about aftercare and healing as well as jewellery changes and purchasing new jewellery.

Talk to your local professional body piercer, they will walk you through the do's and dont's of nostril piercing in detail. That's the best way to find out and get to know your possible new body piercer.

Well if the piercing is truly infected then nothing good can happen by leaving an infected piercing alone. Tissue damage and cartilage damage can cause permanent disfigurement as well as secondary complications with surrounding organs and tissue. If you are having a piercing related issue then I would recommend you go see your professional piercer for assistance.
