Catholicism is an extremely organized religion and so would seem to have many rules. These rules come from the act of Faith, for the way of belief dictates the way of acting.

The ultimate goal of Catholicism is salvation. A soul attains heaven by loving, serving and worshiping God Who is its Creator. All the rules of the Church are designed to aid the soul in this endeavor.

Firstly, there is the rule of belief. When one professes to be Catholic they implicitly accept all the doctrines and teachings that make up the deposit of Faith. It is not permitted to decided which doctrines one will accept or reject; this is not a Catholic attitude. Any doctrine or teaching that is codified by the Church is considered so essential to the Faith that its denial will lead to dire consequences as all Catholic doctrines work together like a tapestry - to rip one out is to implicitly deny the others on some level. From belief comes prayer and action, hence the reason why the Church is so adamant in the rule of belief.

Then there is the rule of practice. Practice comes from belief; we act the way we believe. In order to preserve and bring the soul closer to God the Church recommends certain practices, usually the bare minimum. For instance, going to Church on Sundays to encourage people to pray, not eating meat on Fridays encourages people to do penance, going to Confession and receiving the Eucharist at least once a year to cleanse their soul and receive heavenly graces, etc.

The rule of morals. Since actions always have moral consequences when done by a rational being with free will, the Church sets forth which behaviors are in accordance with human nature and God's Will and which are not. These rules help guide people in virtue and avoid vice.

Disciplinary rules are used in how Catholic customs, ceremonies and prayers are done. This is in order to give uniformity and order to the practice of the faith as humans respond best to structure and routines. How one acts at Mass as well as how Mass transpires are disciplinary constructs built around the above rules.

Usually, Catholics or interested people attend catechism classes in order that they may learn Catholic beliefs which then dictate Catholic practice. For some, the idea of such structure and rules is repugnant and thus they lose sight of the spirit of the rules which is what is important. Theologians like to reference rules as what gives us freedom, a very anti-modern concept: the Faith is like a bridge and the rules are its guide rails. If the rules are removed, giving one complete liberty, the chance of falling is increased exponentially. With the guide rails in place, however, one is free to cross the bridge without fear or anxiety. Such is the Catholic Faith.

Catholic Answer

It's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church. The five (or six) precepts of the Church are listed after the Ten Commandments.

Catholics follow the rules that Jesus Christ laid down for them: to be meek and humble of heart. To love the Lord, their God with all their heart, and all their soul, and all their life, and to love their neighbor as themselves. At least this is the ideal to which every Catholic should be striving. How are we humble? How do we love God with all our hearts? All do we love our neighbor as ourselves. These things we learn from The Bible, from the homilies at Mass, from the inspiration that comes directly from God through our prayer life and our reception of the sacraments, particularly regular Confession and Holy Communion. All of this is expressed in the Ten Commandments and the Five Precepts of the Church (there used to be six, but the sixth is no longer found in the Catechism):

Ten Commandments of God

Exodus XX

1. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

4. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

5. You shall not kill.

6. You shalt not commit adultery.

7. You shalt not steal.

8. You shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor.

9. You shalt not covet your neighbor's wife.

10. You shalt not covet your neighbor's goods.

Five precepts of the Church

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor.

2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year.

3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season.

4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church.

5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church

Two more are often added to this list:

6. You shall obey the marriage laws of the Church

7. You shall participate in the missionary work of the Church

AnswerThe main rule of the Catholic Church forbids anythings that goes against happiness. (Ex: Fornication seems to give happiness but if you divorce, you become really sad since sex creates a bond between people. Using drugs, you receive temporary happiness from it, but afterwards you feel down.)

Sin may seem like a source of happiness, but they are just traps. Things like drugs make you a prisoner of Satan when you are supposed to be beloved children of God.

The two most important commandments are: love God, love your neighbour. That means anything that goes against God and his will or against others is a sin. All it does is make you miserable.

God is the source of everything, including happiness, follow Him your king and you shall receive eternal happiness, happiness you cannot receive from the things of this world.

What are the "Rules of Catholicism?" This question cannot possibly be answered in such a small space! If you really want to understand what the Catholic Church teaches and it's rules, please do yourself a favor and obtain a copy of the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" and contact a Catholic Church to answer your questions. Another good source for Catholic Answers happens to be "Catholic Answers . com" I am Catholic and have dozens of books on Catholicism and although I've been Catholic for 33 years, I'm still learning more about my religion and walk with Jesus Christ every day. The copy of the Catholic Catechism I have contains 842 pages. How could that possibly fit into this little space? This site is limited because it cannot possibly include an in-depth explanation of any single religion, and allows for anyone to answer questions, rather than experts to represent their various faiths. Please find good books and conduct your own research if you have the opportunity! ---- Another Answer "There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him [Jesus] and said, 'Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' "Jesus said to him, 'What is written in the law? How do you read it?' "He said in reply, 'You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.' "He replied to him, 'You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.' Luke 10:25-28. The rules of the Catholic Church boil down to the same: love God with all you have in you, and love your neighbor as yourself.

Catholic AnswerNot sure what you mean by "rules". The Code of Canon Law at the link below listed the legal rules for the Catholic Church. The moral "rules" are how people should live, and these are outlined in the Bible, particularly the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament and the teaching of Our Blessed Lord in the New Testament, particularly the Sermon on the Mount (St. Matthew's Gospel, chapters 5, 6, and 7), and the Corporal Works of Mercy on how we shall be judged at the particular judgment (St. Matthew's Gospel chapter 25:31-46), and the Precepts of the Church:

Catholic AnswerThe worship rules? We join in the worship of the Father which His Son gave to Him on the Cross. The ultimate worship we can give God is to do His Will, not our own. To do that, we must follow in His Son's footsteps and sacrifice ourselves to God and our neighbor as He has commanded us. This is neatly summarized in the Corporal Works of Mercy which Our Blessed Lord told us we would be judged on at the final judgment:

The Corporal Works of Mercy

Matt 25:31

To feed the hungry,

To give drink to the thirsty,

To clothe the naked,

To visit the prisoners,

To shelter the homeless

To visit the sick,

To bury the dead

To give alms to the poor.

This is how the Catechism puts it:

from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

2031 The moral life is spiritual worship. We "present [our] bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God," (Rom 12:1) within the body of Christ that we form and in communion with the offering of his Eucharist. In the liturgy and the celebration of the sacraments, prayer and teaching are conjoined with the grace of Christ to enlighten and nourish Christian activity. As does the whole of the Christian life, the moral life finds it source and summit in the Eucharist sacrifice.

Does Catholic Church follow God's rules?

.Catholic AnswerActually, the Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ (see Ephesians 4:4-13; cf. John 15:5-8; the doctrine is also in Colossians and 1 Corinthians), as such, being His Body, it doesn't follow God's "rules" so much as it is them, and teaches them to people.
