As far as I can tell, there are two kinds of Japanese hair straightening -- the kind you get in American (and perhaps Japanese) salons that requires a lot of heat, and the "straight perm" kind which you can do pretty easily at home if you can find the stuff (it's very common in Japan but a bit rare in the States).

I don't know how the heat-treatment kind works. Here are the basic steps for the straight perm kind:

1. Rinse your hair out with water, but don't use shampoo or especially conditioner.

2. Dry your hair with a towel and wait until it isn't soaking wet anymore, just a bit damp.

3. Put the first solution (probably marked "1") into your hair. Try to really saturate your hair with the stuff. If you've super-long locks, you might need two boxes.

4. Leave it in for about half an hour, combing your hair straight and smoothing it the entire time. It is very important that your hair stays straight during this phase.

5. Wash the stuff out. Take about four minutes and make sure you do a reasonably thorough job.

6. Dry your hair *gently* with a towel. It is very vulnerable to damage until the next step.

7. Put in the second solution and comb/smooth your hair perfectly straight again. It's very important to keep it straight in this step, too. You don't have to leave Solution 2 in for all that long -- twenty minutes should be enough.

8. Go wash it out, taking four minutes to make sure you get it all. Dry your hair with a towel.

9. If leave-in conditioner came in the kit (it is probably marked "3"), apply it now and leave it in.

10. If you need to style your hair, do so now. Just remember that for the next 48 hours, you shouldn't use shampoo or conditioner. You can use water if you need to, though.

11. Don't go to bed directly after you've straightened your hair; I've found that that can make it look all crazy and force you to straighten it again. ;)

It seems like a lot of work, but it only takes an hour or so, and you have straight hair for a couple of months. Quite nice :)

Japanese straight perm stuff is difficult to find in the US, but I've found a very similar thing -- it's called Ogilvie Straightener, and CVS carries it. It works well. If you really must have genuine ones from Japan, they are up on eBay pretty frequently -- do a search for "Proqualite;" they make good stuff, and their EX kits are nice and strong.

If you live in Europe or some other place, I really can't help you much with availability :-\

I hope this guide helped, and good luck :)

Where can one find info on Japanese hair straightening?

Japanese hair straightening is a permanent method of straightening your hair. Once performed, the daily use of a straightener to achieve straight smooth hair is not necessary. This procedure can be very expensive and it does not affect the roots of the hair; when the hair starts to grow it will have the properties of your natural hair type.

Keratian is a temporary hair relaxer. Your hair grows out how it looks naturally, and the relaxer on the treated part of your hair fades after a while. Japanese straightening lasts for almost a year, and it works better than Keratin.

The straightening iron will probably do less damage to your hair than a straightening kit. The straightening kit contains chemicals, but a straightener is just heat.

What is the shortest hair you can have to get Japanese hair straightening?

I think the shortest hair is about a half an inch long, since it is impossible to iron such short hair (ironing is part of the process). Also, when you have very long hair straightened, they always leave about a quarter of an inch which they don't apply the treatment to, because there is no way to iron so close to the scalp.
