Answer: In Harry Potter, seven is a powerful number, and because Tom Riddle wanted to be the most powerful wizard ever, he wanted seven horcruxes. Just to explain, you get a horcrux if you kill someone, it's like splitting your soul, and if you do that, you're immortal. Tom Riddle wanted seven because he wanted to be totally and completely indestructible. So, there are seven because Riddle killed seven people and made those bits of his sole into horcruxes. Horcruxes are also pretty dangerous, like the diary in the Chamber of Secrets. It gave Voldemort strength because Ginny Weasley was pouring some of her own soul into it, which is why she nearly died. Dumbledore's hand burnt off because of the ring (Half-blood-prince). Riddle wanted the Horcruxes to be a special thing to him (hence the diary).

So basically, there are seven horcruxes because Voldemort wanted to rule the world (mwahahahaa)

Hope that helped! :)

Answer: Note that Voldemort wanted to make SIX horcruxes, to split his soul into seven pieces (the seventh piece would remain with himself). He accidentally created one extra horcrux.

Because 7 is believed to be a magical number. Voldemort killed 7 people in order to split his soul into the magical number 7. E.g As the number seven is a powerful, mystical number in the world of Harry Potter, Voldemort intended to split his soul into that many pieces, with six in Horcruxes and the last reposing within his body. When Voldemort attacked the Potter family, he had been intending to make his sixth and final Horcrux with the death of "The Chosen One." Despite his defeat, he actually succeeded in doing so: when his body was destroyed by the rebounded Killing Curse, a piece of his soul was spelled off and attached itself to the only living thing remaining in the room-Harry Potter-effectively making The Boy Who Lived a sixth Horcrux. Voldemort, unaware of this, "completed" his collection of Horcruxes by turning his snake Nagini into one, thus fragmenting his soul into a total of eight (counting the one residing in his own body), not seven, pieces. Complicating things even further, only six Horcruxes ever existed at any one time in the series: by the time Nagini had been made a Horcrux, one of the original Horcruxes had already been destroyed. All of Voldemort's deliberately-created Horcruxes were made using objects that had been important or held some sentimental value.

He put the facts together. He first, I think, got the idea when Harry showed him Tom Riddle's Diary (Book Two, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) . Harry told him what had happened, and Dumbledore began to question whether it was really just a memory. He then began exploring memories, and the Hephzibah memory showed that Tom was after the founders of Hogwarts artifacts. The sixth book, HP and the Half-Blood-Prince, was mostly about collecting Voldemort's past. When Harry got the true memory from Slughorn, it showed how many Voldemort planned to make. The Young Voldemort had asked Slughorn what would happen if you went beyond the usual evil and made 7 Horcruxes. And then when Harry recounted what had happened in the graveyard at the end of the Triwizard Tournament (Book 4), Dumbledore knows what Voldemort said that suggested that not only did he make Horcruxes, he made more than just one. By the time that Harry brings back this memory, two Horcruxes are destroyed (TR Diary, Gaunt's ring).

There are 8, however Voldemort did not mean to create on of them.

HE UNINTENTIONALLY MADE HARRY INTO A HORCRUX.

On the night when Voldemort went to kill the potters, when he tried to kill Harry, harry was protected by his mother's (Lily's) love, so the killing curse rebounded to voldemort, destroying him. A part of his soul shattered off and attached itself to the only living thing it could find. With both James and Lily (Harry's parents) dead, this was Harry, thus - making harry a Horcrux.

How does the relationship change between dumbledor and Harry Potter?

What did Albus Dumbledore believe Lord Voldemort used as his sixth horcrux?

Dumblerdore wanted Harry to find the Horcuxes and kill them. Then kill Voldmort. Dumbledore didn't want Harry to know about the Hallows because he only wants Harry to concentrate on the Horcuxes , not Hallows. Dumbledore never told Harry about the Hallows because he did not want Harry to be tempted to take them for the wrong reasons. The Hallows are dangerous magical objects to posses and he wanted Harry to be safe if he had them. But Dumbledore clearly intended for Harry to have at least 2 of the Hallows because he left Harry the Resurrection Stone in the Golden Snitch (Harry already possessed the Invisibility Cloak) and he left the symbol of the Deathly Hallows in the Tales of Beedle the Bard for Hermoine to decipher. Dumbledore knew Voldemort would go after the Elder Wand and he planned to die undefeated as its last true master, thus breaking its power. But because Draco Malfoy disarmed him while he was still alive, the wand switched its allegiance to Draco and its power was preserved. Dumbledore wanted Harry to destroy the Horcruxes, but he wanted Harry to have the Resurrection Stone as well to help him find the courage to allow Voldemort to kill him. Therefore Dumbledore wanted him to have both Hallows and Horcruxes.

How many Horcruxes are left?

After book 7: none.

How can Draco Malfoy's soul be damaged by Dumbledore's death?
