Seizures are the main sign. The "size" or grade of the seizure varies with the type of Epilepsi you have. How often you have seizure depends on wether you are letting something trigger it (poorly explained), like if you're smoking that might trigger a seizure or if your alcohol level gets to high or if your body temperature gets to high or to low you can also get a seizure.

Anyway if you're having cramps or you're unable to control your body and/or unable to talk (you are able to make sounds, yet not say fully sentences or words) you might be having a seizure

Convulsions are involuntary contractions of voluntary muscles that are more than momentary, and the patient cannot surpress. The ten symptoms of convulsions are: * Body twitching * Body spasms * Jerking limbs * Head spasms * Facial spasms * Fits * Bowel incontinence * Urinary incontinence * Loss of consciousness * Sleeping after convulsions (post-dictal torpor). (From WrongDiagnoses.com -- see links). Convulsions do not typically manifest all of these symptoms in one episode. Note also that convuslions are not themselves the disease, but are diagnostic of an underlying problem.

The first step in being prepared is to recognize warning signs of possible seizures. While a variety of behaviors may occur in different types of seizures, not all behavioral changes are seizures. Some symptoms may be due to other medical problems or events or possibly due to side effects of medicine. When sorting out symptoms, consider these four main characteristics of seizures; seizures are usually…

  • Unpredictable - you often can't predict when and where a seizure may happen
  • Episodic - seizures can come and go
  • Brief - usually last only seconds to a few minutes
  • Stereotypic - symptoms are similar whenever they occur

Now consider the different feelings or behaviors that may occur at the beginning, middle or end of a seizure. Sometimes these symptoms may be considered a warning to a seizure or are part of the seizure itself. If any of these symptoms are present, start keeping track of what occurs and share it with your doctor. Some warning signs of possible seizures may include:

  • Odd feelings, often indescribable
  • Unusual smells, tastes, or feelings
  • Unusual experiences - 'out-of-body' sensations; feeling detached; body looks or feels different; situations or people look unexpectedly familiar or strange
  • Feeling spacey, 'fuzzy', or confused
  • Periods of forgetfulness or memory lapses
  • Daydreaming episodes
  • Jerking movements of an arm, leg, or body
  • Tingling, numbness or feelings of electricity in part of the body
  • Headaches
  • Unexplained confusion, sleepiness, weakness
  • Losing control of urine or stool unexpectedly

There are many types of seizures. In a grand mal (tonic-clonic) seizure, there are major muscle contracctions and loss of consciousness, along with urinary (and even fecal) incontinence, associated with falling, potentially striking the head, and also risk of biting the tongue. In complex partial seizures, there may a (Jacksonian) march of symptoms, gradually moving from one part of the body to another, or fewer motor movements, depending on the type. In petit mal (absence type) seizure, there are a few seconds of what seems like absent minded-ness and then a farily quick recovery.

Did Julius Caesar suffer from epilepsy?

Modern research thinks it's doubtful that Caesar had epilepsy. After studying Caesar's symptoms and his lifestyle, the consensus is that he suffered from hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. The symptoms of low blood sugar mimic those of epilepsy. As the ancients were not familiar with hypoglycemia, but were familiar with epilepsy, they naturally assumed that he was an epileptic.
