Anemia is not a single disease, The common types are:

  • Iron-deficiency anemia. This is the most common type of anemia. .
  • Pernicious anemia. This is also called Vitamin B-12 anemia. Aplastic anemia.
  • Aplastic anemia is when your body cannot make enough red blood cells. This type of anemia can be caused by the destruction of bone marrow by factors outside of your body.
  • Sickle Cell anemia. This is a hereditary condition that is characterized by red blood cells taking on a crescent (sickle) shape.
  • Trauma related anemia. This occurs when your body loses a large amount of red blood cells at one time.

The symptoms vary with the type although the lack of red blood cells causes a general fatigue, pallor (pale skin colour), and weakness.

Anemia due to major blood loss may make you feel dizzy and very weak, especially if you stand up suddenly.

If the anemia is severe tissues and organs to be completely starved of blood and oxygen. If this happens, cells rapidly die in a process called ischemia.

In sickle cell anemia,red blood sells are oddly shaped and jam up in capillaries blocking normal blood flow. This may cause serious ischemia in the patients feet, sometimes requiring amputation. This also increases the risk of stroke due to blood clots.

For cancer related anemia, the most common symptoms are usually fatigue and shortness of breath.

Fatigue and weakness are signs of anemia. Becoming quite tired after minimal physical exertion. Anemia is not having enough oxygen in your blood, so just think of it like you have less "go" behind the biological processes in your body.

Common symptoms of anemia are fatigue, weakness, and poor concentration. Sometimes because of the lack of oxygen in the blood, the heart pumps faster, which may present symptoms of heart failure. However, many times, symptoms for anemia do not present themselves and a person is able to live a life with the disease not being treated.

Anemia often begins as a mild condition but worsens over time. Those with anemia may often experience only one or two symptoms that seem unrelated at first but symptoms may worse or progress to other problems as their condition worsens. Anemia is caused when there are not enough red blood cells that are healthy to carry oxygen to the body.

Symptoms of anemia include, but are not limited to:

* headaches

* irregular or fast heartbeat

* pale or ashen skin

* unexplained fatigue

* chest pain or shortness of breath

* difficulty thinking or changes in mood

* dizziness

* cold feet or hands

As the condition begins to progress, the body may become accustomed to the symptoms so they may go unnoticed for some time. Other symptoms such as unusual food cravings may occur in conjunction with symptoms of anemia such as the urge to chew ice or other things including starch, clay or paper. Those who have rapid onset of symptoms are often likely to notice them sooner than those who have a gradual onset.

Moderate and severe forms of anemia require treatment in order to prevent life threatening complications. A physician may inquire about symptoms experienced or ask questions about family history before running tests to determine if anemia is present. Anemia may have a number of causes so it is important to have it evaluated properly before beginning any treatment.

Some medicines can cause symptoms of anemia, and if they are noticed should be reported to the administering physician in order to either changes medicines or monitor the condition in case it worsens. Deficiencies in iron or other vitamins may also lead to anemic conditions, which are often treatable by replacing these vitamins. Some people may be at a higher risk of inheriting anemia due to a number of factors. Often women who have excessive needs for iron due to menstrual problems or pregnancy may also be at risk for anemia.
