In animals the six most common elements are oxygen, hydrogen (both mostly in the form of water), carbon, calcium, nitrogen and phosphorous. In plants magnesium would probably be more common than calcium. Which of these is most important is unanswerable; if any one of them was somehow removed from your body you'd die immediately. There are elements present in the human body that have no known biological function, but it's necessary to skip down about ten more spots on the "most common" list before you find one.
