One major thing political parties do is nominate candidates for office, like the president. Then they inform people why they should vote for their candidate, what they believe in, and try to stimulate them to act. They also watch over the other parties to make sure they are not doing anything illegal or wrong.

For instance, the Democratic party nominated Obama to be their candidate for the future president and the Republican party nominated McCain as theirs. Then the two parties tried to reach out to the people by posting signs, giving out buttons, and etc. And as they tried to gain support, they also watch what the other party was doing.

The political parties' beliefs also influence officials while they're in office. The Republicans might sway to one side because of what they believe in and the Democrats might lean toward the other side because of what they believe in.
