1. 11 players on a team 2. Pitch must be rectangular with specific markings and dimensions (90m-120m long x 45m-90m wide) 3. There is one goalkeeper on each team, who can use hands on the ball. But they can only use their hands inside their team's penalty area (18 yard box) 4. The rest of the players can only play the ball with their feet, legs, chest, head and any body part other than the arm and hand, at all times. 5. a goal is scored when the whole of the ball crosses the goal line. 6. The game lasts a total of 90 minutes, with two halves of 45 minutes. There is a 15 minute half time break. 7. The stopwatch is never stopped at any point other than half time and the end of the game. There are no timeouts. Any time wasted during the game is totalled and added on to the end of each half as 'extra time'. The amount of time added is judged by the referee and the assistant officials. 8. Players can be subsituted at any break of play (free kick, throw in etc.) during the match. Each team can make 3 substitutes each match, and can select the player coming on from a set of 7 players. Once substituted off the pitch, a player can not return. 9. The game is officiated by one referee, two linesmen (or 'assistant referees'), and sometimes a 4th official. 10. In knock-out situations, when teams are tied on score after full time (90 mins) there is then a section of extra time. It is two halves of 15 minutes. 11. If there is still no winner after extra time. There is a penalty shootout. This is a best of 5 competition. If penalties are tied then it becomes sudden death. 12. If a player is fouled, a free kick is awarded. If the free kick is 'indirect' the player cannot shoot at goal from the free kick. A direct free kick can be a shot on goal. The player who takes the free kick can only touch the ball once until another player touches the ball. No defending player can stand within 10 yards of the ball. 13. If a player is fouled inside the penalty area, a penalty is given. The ball is placed on the spot, it is a straight shot at goal, one on one with the keeper. No other player may interrupt until the ball is kicked. 14. OFFSIDE- search for a full description. BUT.... its basically when a player is closer to the opposition's goal line than every opposing player, when the ball is passed to thim. They must be level with the last player or further away. 15. When foul play occurs, the referee can show a yellow card or a red card. A yellow is a warning, a red means you are sent off and cannot be replaced. Your team must play with one less player. Two yellows constitutes a red. 16. throw in. if the ball is put out of play. the team who did not put it put of play may throw the ball back in.
