I think the main "social issue" in The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton is the battle between the social classes. On one hand you have the privileged Socs, and on the other, the Greasers. This is a source of tension throughout the novel, ultimately causing the demise of Dally.

The solution is that after the greasers win, ponyboy learns a valuable lesson in his life.
