The emotional needs of a child with Down syndrome or any other disability are the same as any child-- to be loved, respected, cherished, to feel parents/caregivers are proud of them, and to feel safe in their homes as they grow up. All children need kindness and love but also direction, guidance and rules, with consequences so that all children will know appropriate boundaries and social norms.

== == * I have a 4-year-old son with Down syndrome. "Special needs" is just a way of saying that the person with the disability will need extra attention in every aspect of their lives.

For example, early intervention in babies and young children with "special needs" is always good. It helps them get started in learning and/or experiencing life. Kids with Down syndrome learn slower than typically advanced people. Yes, they need help with learning, but that does not mean that they do not learn at all. =]

There is no list of "special needs," but rather that everything requires extra attention and help.

  • Emotional needs for a child are to love them by protecting them; being there when they have nightmares or are ill; listening to what they have to say; teaching them fun things to do; having good quality time with them such as playing or taking them to a movie or being there when they are either in a concert or, if the boy is into sports or the girl into dance, etc., that one or both parents are there to root them on and turn up for the games vs. another team or concerts performed by the arts. Emotional needs also include getting to know your child well and know their moods enough where you can spot quickly if they are frightened; insecure; perhaps bullied or are depressed as well as eating too much or not eating enough and sit down calmly with your child and try to help them figure out a solution to their problem whether you think that problem for their age bracket is important or not ; it could simply be About a Boy or girl they are interested in. If you have a child that is Mentally Handicapped or Handicapped in any way then it is wise to seek help from programs or, a psychologist that deals in the behavior of your child to learn the tools to love your child, but know the boundaries of also controlling any outbursts they may have. The end result is that a parent or parents earn the trust of the child knowing they have a loving and understanding parent or parents and a safe house to come home too.
