You will travel through three stages... but the only stages you will mostly likely give a darn about is the first two.... The first stage begins with the onset of contractions and ends when the cervix is fully dilated. This stage is divided into two phases, known as early and active labor. During early labor, your cervix gradually effaces (thins out) and dilates (opens)... this lasts to 3cm.... That's followed by active labor, when your cervix begins to dilate more rapidly and contractions are longer, stronger, and closer together This is usually from 4cm - 8cm.. Finally... 8cm - 10cm is usually reffered to as "transition" although it is still a part of active labor.
The second stage of labor begins once you're fully dilated and ends with the birth of your baby. This is often referred to as the pushing stage.

The third and final stage begins right after the birth of your baby and involves the separation and delivery of the placenta. YOUR work is pretty much done by the time you get here... sometimes the placenta pretty much expels itself... you may have to give a little push but I would compare that more to trying to fart rather than what you have just done to get your baby out...

For first-time moms who are at least 37 weeks along, labor and delivery takes an average of 15 hours according to the web sites I have visited... although for plenty of women it lasts more than 20 hours, and for a lucky few it's over much sooner. For women who've been through labor before, deliveries average around eight hours. These are just AVERAGE numbers... my first labor lasted for 28 hours for example... so nothing here time wise is set in stone.. but those are the stages of labor... hope that helps.......
