1. light energy from the sun hits the thylakoid membrane (of chloroplast), exciting the chlorophyll molecules in photosystem 1 and photosystem 2

2. excited electrons from photosystem 1 drive down the thylakoid membrane and create NADPH from NADP+

3. excited electrons from photosystem 2 drive down the membrane and pull H+ ions into the intermembrane space, these electrons replenish photosystem 1

4. The splitting of H2O forms oxygen gas, which replenishes the electrons from photosystem 2

5. The H+ ions in the intermembrane space have a lot of potential energy, so they go through ATP Synthase- which binds ADP and 1 phosphate to make ATP

The NADPH and ATP formed go on to the Calvin Cycle in the stroma.

As light is absorbed the electrons pass through the pigments. The energy passes through the PEA molecules in the thykaloid membrane. The energy moves through the electron transport chain. The energy has been replenished. Water splitting occurs in the Calvin Cycle. All of the energies are paired with a H plus ion.

The steps of light reaction are as follows:

  1. H20 is photolyzed and releases Oxygen and Hydrogen.
  2. The Photosystem II absorbs photons and its electrons are excited.
  3. These electrons are than transfered to an electron transport chain.
  4. In the chain, the electrons are transferred to Plastoquinone, Cytochrome complex and plastocyanin. During this movement of electrons, energy is harvested in form of ATP.
  5. Electrons are then transferred to Photosystem I where they are excited again.
  6. Than they pass through Sulfur containing proteins and Ferredoxin to reach NADP+ Reductase.
  7. This enzyme than reduces NADP+ to NADPH.

The ATP and NADPH harvested during this cycle are necessary for the Calvin cycle, the other main phase of photosynthesis.

The Light Dependent process and then the Light Independent process (known as the Calvin Cycle).

Where does photosythsis occur?

Photosynthesis occurs in the choloroplast, a organelle in the cell. More specifically: photosynthesis is divided into several steps. The first step/steps is the light reaction, or light-independent reaction. This happens to absorb the photons, and with it, the energy, from the sun. This part occurs in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast. The second part is the Calvin cycle, or the dark/ light-dependent reaction. This part takes the results of the first reaction, and change that energy that was captured into glucose. This occurs in the grana of the choloroplast.

What are the steps in light-dependent reaction?

Oxygen turns into six part carbon sugars

Who is Scientist Robert hill?

He was a British plant biochemist who, in 1939, demonstrated the 'Hill reaction' of photosynthesis. It proved that oxygen is evolving during the light requiring steps of photosynthesis. He also made significant contributions to the development of the Z-scheme of oxygenic photosynthesis.
