The process of becoming a Special Forces soldier is a lengthy one. The following is a condensed answer. A soldier must first be selected to train. This is done during the first phase of training known as Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS).
If a soldier is selected he chooses a language to learn and a specialty. The specialties are; Explosives and Engineering, Weapons, Communication, or Medicine.
If the soldier is not yet airborne qualified, he must then attend and complete the US Army Airborne school. A soldier then begins the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC) by attending a 4-6 month language course to learn a foreign language. After completing language training he must then attend and complete the 7 week Small Unit Tactics (SUT) course. Once complete the soldier then must attend and complete the 3 week Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) course. Upon completion he begins training in his specialty (56 weeks for Medics and 13 weeks for the other three specialties). Finally future Special Forces soldiers must complete the 30 day culmination exercise known as Robin Sage. After completion the soldier is allowed to wear the Special Forces tab on his uniform and wear the Green Beret.
Go to an Army recruiting station and tell them you want to join as an 18X Special Forces Candidate. Then pass the tests and medical exams to qualify. Go to basic and infantry training for 4 1/2 months. Then go to airborne school for 3 weeks. Next you'll go the the Special Operations Preparation Course for one month. Then you go through selection which is just under 3 weeks. If you get selected then you can start the Qualification course. Depending on the job you get selected for the "Q" course could take from 1 to 2 years to complete and it consists of 4 phases. Once you finish you're awarded the special forces tab and the green beret, and you're sent to an SF group.
there are a couple ways to start out, first go to a recruiter and ask about it he then will set you up to a sf recruiter. The most common is while you are at your unit get in touch with your retention office and they can tell you when the next post meeting is. Then you go to the meeting the guys who give you the class are sf qualified recruiters and will tell you the history, mission, what to expect, ect, ect, then they will walk you through it from there.
