What are the steps to castrating an animal?

1. Step 1 Elastrator Obtain the castration tool and the rubber bands. This can be purchased at a feed store or at a farm retail store. They are relatively inexpensive and can be used multiple times.
2. Step 2 Elastrator castration happens to a young male animal that is only a few days old.
3. Step 3 Place rubber band around the four points and squeeze the handle to open up rubber band.
4. Step 4 You will need two people for this task, one to operate the device and the other to firmly secure the animal. Fully stabilize and secure the animal from any movement. It is easiest if they are laid down, but it is fine if they are allowed to stand.
5. Step 5 Place the rubber band around the scrotum and testicles, making sure BOTH testicles are down and below the band then release the tool allowing the band to close around and above BOTH testicles. Spray area with wound protector to prevent screw worms.
6. Step 6 The animal will display moments of discomfort for the first 10-20 minutes and then the area will go numb and discomfort will subside. It will take about 2 weeks for the scrotum to dry up and fall off.
7. Step 7 The benefits of the elastrator are that it is a bloodless method of castration. And since there is no laceration or open wound it will decrease the chance of the animal obtaining an infection.
8. Step 8 In about 2 weeks re-inspect the scrotum area to review progress and ensure the band did not break.
