When becoming Bar-Mitzvah (boys at 13) or Bat-Mitzva (girls at 12) a Jewish child becomes an adult. No special symbols are required for this; it happens as soon as the birthday begins at sundown.

There are no specific symbols associated with the bar mitzvah ceremony. During the ceremony, the bar mitzvah will read from the Torah in front of the congregation as part of the regular prayer services.

Bar mitzvah is not a symbol. The phrase refers to the person ... the Jewish male who turns

13 years of age. At that point in his life, the responsibility for his choices and actions passes

from his parents to himself, and he is called a "Bar Mitzvah" ... a 'son of commandments'.

It's considered a happy milestone in the process of raising a child, and it's typically marked

with joyful celebration. But it's important to understand that the Jewish boy who turns 13 is

then endowed with adult responsibilities according to Judaism, whether anyone celebrates

the occasion, or is even aware of it. And the Bar Mitzvah is not a symbol. He's a living,

breathing, adult member of his Jewish community.

There are several symbols/observances associated with Jewish weddings but not all are necessarily obligatory; a hupah (cloth canopy under which the ceremony takes place), a gift from the groom to the bride (usually a ring of some value), seven blessings, the groom making a declaration of betrothal, and giving the bride a marriage-contract in which he undertakes certain obligations to her, kosher wine or kosher Grape Juice, breaking of the glass (to symbolize the memory of the destruction of the Jewish Temples even at the joyous occasion), a meal to celebrate the wedding, dancing.

At the age of thirteen, which is when the Bar Mitzva ceremony is held, the young man enters Jewish adulthood and becomes a full member of the adult congregation.
He reads a portion of the Torah, or a Haftarah from the Prophets, with the traditional trope (chant) and blessings. He will have been taught how to do this, as well as some basics about the Torah and mitzvot (Jewish observances). A celebratory meal is customary, and does not have to be in the ame place or the same day.
The importance of the Bar Mitzva is that it is a major Jewish life-event and hopefully it will impress upon the young man the value and desirability of exploring and experiencing his heritage.
In this age of generation-gaps, rebelliousness and personal upheavals, many people and families could benefit from the wisdom of their ancient forebears. Today, the major Torah-texts and commentaries are available in translation; and there are outreach organizations and beginner yeshivas which serve to make the full breadth of Torah understandable to whoever is interested. In many instances it is the Bar Mitzva ceremony which sparks the beginning of a youngster's becoming a circumspect, courteous, knowledgeable and respectable peer in his Jewish community.

it means "daughter of the commandments". for a boy, it's "son of the commandments" and would be called a bar mitzvah.
