There are actually a few possible symptoms. If it is stuck open the engine may have a very hard time idling if it can Idle. Next would be a stuck closed or for some other reason inop egr valve would raise the Nitrous ox levels in a emission test. In some cases it can also cause a vehicle to Ping or detonate while driving. Next would be one that has a Vacuum leak in the shaft that opens the Valve. If it is leaking though to the outside it can also cause a Vacuum leak causing a ruff Idle. I most Ford it may also set a code in the computer turing on a check engine light.

On a 1996 Ford Explorer ( that has the 4.0 L EFI V6 engine ) the EGR valve is located on the drivers side of the engine beside the engine oil dipstick ( it is lower down and has a round top on it )

I know on my ( 1995 ) Ford Explorer with the 4.0 liter when I look in the engine compartment from the drivers side , the EGR valve is just to the left of the engine oil dipstick just above the exhaust manifold ( the top is round shaped )
